What is SEER?
SEER is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio of an air conditioner. It is a measure of how efficient the air conditioner is. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER, of an air conditioner provides a way of comparing available AC units on the market by their ability to cool your home efficiently. An efficient air conditioner saves you money on energy bills by using less electricity to run, while also making your home more comfortable.
In the United States, the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio of air conditioners is determined by a lab test from both the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE).
This savings can save you thousands in operating costs over the lifetime of your air conditioning unit. All things being equal, a higher SEER would indicate a more effective air conditioner. In general, seer ratings range from 10 to 24 SEER for home central AC units.
How does the SEER calculator work?
The goal is to assist you in evaluating the conditioning expenses of air conditioners with SEER ratings and estimate your savings.
Based on three parameters, the SEER calculator calculates how much you spend each year on cooling your home by calculating and comparing the SEER rating of your present air conditioner system:
- The size of your air conditioner in tonnes : Begin by determining the tonnage of your unit. Your air conditioner’s cargo is a measurement of its size and cooling capability. If you look closely at the model number, you’ll notice a number divisible by 12. It’s a 4-tonne air conditioner if it has 48 (48/12=4).
- The price of power per kilowatt-hour (kWh): Next, look for the two-digit SEER rating on the same label. The final step is to navigate the predicted AC unit’s SEER rating. After that, calculate the energy cost in your location in cents per kilowatt-hour.
- Cooling hours of the unit: Last but not least, enter the number of hours your air conditioning system runs throughout the season. The SEER calculator will provide the annual savings in dollars for years.
It then compares this information to an efficient air conditioner to calculate how much money an AC with that SEER rating may save you in cooling bills each year. In the vast majority of situations, the potential savings are enormous!
